Sports Conditioning
If you are training for a particular sport your training should be sport specific. In order to improve your sporting performance your training has
to be relevant to your sport.
Basic cardiovascular functioning is essential as all sports require bursts of effort, normally followed by short periods of recovery. This means that not only do our clients need endurance but also an efficient short term energy system.
Training for different types of intensities and recovery periods will vary from sport to sport but whatever your heart rate does during the sport, it should be mimicked in training.
The movements performed in a particular sport are also critical to the training programme devised. Not only are we looking to increase the strength of muscles which produces the movements but also address the components of speed, control and co-ordination.
Core stability is essential for all sports. Your core muscles control all movement and especially movements which involve rotation and balance. A strong core base helps keep you stable and promotes agility.
When looking at your own sport you need to ask the following question:
- What components of fitness I am using?
- Which one of these components is the weakness?
- How can I stimulate this action or energy system in training?
We have written a basic SportFit training programme which combines dynamic sport movements into a circuit and provides details on progressive interval training based CV training.
A lot of the sport conditioning work we do is for squash athletes, use the links below see examples of some of the sessions:
